An investigation was launched this week by Prince William County Fire and Rescue personnel following a fast-moving fire that destroyed eight vehicles and damaged three others, officials say.

The fire was reported at around 3:45 a.m. on Wednesday morning at the Summerland Heights Apartment complex.

Crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire after being called to the scene, but the damage had been done.

Investigators initially determined that the fire started by an electrical malfunction in the hybrid vehicle, which spread to nearby parked cars, while leaking gasoline contributed to the spread of the flames; however, it was later updated to be declared "undetermined."

The fires remain under investigation.
